Artificial Intelligence: The Beginning and the End of Human Wisdom
Shuyuan Mary Ho Metcalf, Florida State University
Tue. August 1, 1p ET/ 12a CT/ 11a MT/ 10a PT
ChatGPT has drawn significant attention from early adopters. While this generative artificial intelligence (AI) system can be somewhat intuitive, such technology can also be disruptive in domains that require creativity (e.g., computer coding, education), information authenticity (e.g., news agencies, and intelligence communities) and precision (e.g., clinical decision-making, manufacturing). In this talk, Shuyuan will discuss the significance of AI adoption, her recent work utilizing research computing center (RCC) resources at Florida State University, and ethics and implications of AI adoption in society.
Strategy and Policy-Facing Track (1st Wednesdays)
Reflections and discussion of PEARC23.
Wed. August 2nd, 12p ET/ 11a CT/ 10a MT/ 9a PT

Evolution of Containers for HPC
David Godlove, CIQ

In this session, Dave Godlove (Solutions Architect) will provide an update on the ongoing evolution of containers for HPC. We’ll discuss the transition from Singularity to Apptainer as a project supported by the Linux Foundation. Then we’ll turn attention to leveraging fake root permissions using the User namespace and running containers in “rootless mode”. We’ll also briefly discuss new recommendations for running containers in parallel and strategies for securing pre-built base containers. Finally, we will discuss job orchestration for containers in HPC. This presentation will be followed by a community discussion.
